How To Halt Your Headaches

June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, and we want to raise our voice to help boost awareness towards those who suffer chronically from either of these conditions.

Multiple factors influence the presence of both headaches and migraines, and as more research is being conducted, more preventative measures can be taken. You may be someone who suffers chronically from either of these, or you may know someone who does; so, you may ask yourself:

What types of headaches are there? How do I know which one I have?

There are multiple types of headaches, here are some of the most common:

  • Migraines are the most common type of headaches and last for hours to a few days. Migraines are associated with sensitivity to light, nausea, vomiting, and throbbing pain. There are many triggers of migraines such as stress, environment, diet, or hormonal changes, and can be treated in different ways. Migraine treatments include medications, lifestyle changes and therapies such as relaxation or massage therapy.

  • After a migraine, the tension headache is the second most common type of headache. These headaches usually cause pain around the temples, front of the forehead, and the back of the head. They cause immense pressure and can last hours to days. Tension headaches can usually trigger migraines or vice versa, and can be treated with physical therapy, muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatories.

  • Cluster headaches are often short lived compared to tension headaches and migraines, and aren’t usually triggered by anything specific. They are usually one-sided and appear many times a day, possibly for weeks. They tend to be some of the most painful headaches to occur, and treatment is important to prevent them from happening often.

Who can I see for help with my headaches or migraines?

First and foremost, it is important to talk to a health professional. Migraines and headaches are complicated, and are treated very specifically. Some physicians may refer you to other doctors like an ear nose and throat specialist, or therapists such as an acupuncture or massage therapist.

You are not alone! Every day, many people suffer from both migraines and headaches. There are multiple causes, but there are also numerous treatments and medications to help ease your pain and tension.

If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or have high anxiety levels, it may also be beneficial to talk to a counselor. Our therapists at Arcadian Therapy specialize in anxiety, stress, trauma and so much more. We can aid in the reduction of your headaches by relieving your stress and be a supportive system for you to talk to.
